A group of fishermen led by the Executive Secretary of the Ghana National Canoe Fisherman Association, Mr. Nii Abeo Kyere Kuanda, (Chief fisherman) yesterday thronged to the street of Accra calling on Government to intervene to halt fishing with light in the country.
The group from across the country carried placates with the inscriptions; 'President Mill fulfill your campaign promises', Ghana Navy be alive to your responsibility' and many more.
According to them, fishing with light is causing danger to the fishing industry.
A member of the group who gave his name as chairman Attah in an interview with Times said "the activities of these pair trawlers coupled with the usage of dynamite to catch fishes are unlawful".
He explained that, the light is inserted into the targeted area of the sea which draws the attention of smaller fishes than the bigger ones.
"This has made it difficult to catch the bigger fishes and also market them" he added.
Mr. Attah noted that the shortage of the premix fuel has necessitated such appalling act among certain fisherman.
He said though the police used water and gun shot to dismiss the group at the ministries, the leadership of the group managed to present petition to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
