Samuel Osei Kuffour |
Our heroes of the past who contributed massively to the development of sports in the country deserve a befitting commendation.
However, it is indeed sad to notice that most of these once reliable, dependable, committed players which brought honour to nation some years back have not being honoured.
A player like Ex-Black Star defender, Samuel Osei Kuffour's testimonial match is long overdue.
Just a couple of days ago in Nigeria, Kuffour joined his colleagues to play in Nwankwo Christian Nwosu Kanu testimonial match for his immense contribution to the super Eagles of Nigeria over the years.
My question is when was the last time a hero was celebrated as far as football is concerned in this country?
Kuffour on the international front was a member of 200-01 Bayern Munich squad that won the ninth edition of the Uefa champions’ league, beating Valencia 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time.
And this made him the second player to attain such height for Ghana after the Maestro Abedi Ayew Pele led Olympic Marseille in France to win the Uefa champions league in 1993.
Again he scored the only goal of the match against Boca Juniors played in Tokyo to hand his side the intercontinental Cup and also finished as second in the African Footballer of the Year after voting in the same year.
The former King Faisal babies player popular known among his fans as 'Sammy Tugah' featured in all the national teams especially during the 1992 Olympics staged in Barcelona where the men’s football won bronze.
Although he committed a blunder during the 2006 World Cup staged in Germany when the Black Stars of Ghana locked horn against Azzurri of Italy in the group stages, must that be a factor for us to underrate his services to the nation all this while?
If this is anything to go by, then the ministry of youth and sports through the Ghana Football Association (GFA) should organize a ceremonial match for him to serve a morale booster for upcoming players not only in football but in other sporting disciplines as well.
