She said during the investigation the accused admitted the offence and was arraigned before this honourable court.

IN-LAWS IN COURT FOR ASSAULTING EACH OTHER

 By Ebenezer Zor.

 Source: Ghanaian Times

Two women, who allegedly assaulted and threatened to kill each other, were put before an Accra circuit court, last Monday.

They are Henritta Tsotsoo Kpobi, an accountant, and Rose Atswei, a trader.

The two, charged with assault and threat of death were admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢ 6,000 with a surety, by the court presided over by Ms. Georgina Mensah Datsa.

They are to reappear on July 4.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Sarah Acquah stated that the first accused, Henrietta was married to the second accused's son and they all live at Teshie, a suburb of Accra.

According to ASP Acquah, Henrietta's mother and her son-in-law have been litigated over a house and on April 18 this year, her husdand went to court and brought a  summons to be served on his mother-in-law.

When Henrietta's mother was served the summons, she became offended, took a saucepan and made unbearable noise toward the second accused, Rose where her husband lives.

Then the second accused who was not on talking terms with Henrietta's mother became furious on seeing her entering the store room.

Ms. Acquah said when Henrietta could not trace the whereabouts of her husband, she rained insults on the second accused, her mother-in-law

The second accused retaliated by hitting her with a saucepan and threatened that 'If anything happens to my son, i will kill you and your family'.

Later when they were separated by sympathizers, both made reports to the police and after  thorough investigations were charged with assault and threat to kill each other, accordingly.

RECALLED APPIAH TO STARS.

In spite of the brilliant performances by the Black Stars squad in recent times, the team might need the services of some influential players in the rest of their continental clashes.

This step when taken could inspire the young chaps to play their hearts out and even learn more from them.

Indeed i was so glad when Mr. Isaac Tetteh of T.T Brothers in the Friday June, 17, 2011 publication of 'Graphic Sports' newspaper called for the "reinstatement of Black Stars midfielder and former captain, Stephen 'Tornado' Appiah to the stars fold".

I am on the same wave length with him, because he retired as a result of severe criticisms from the football fraternity when things was not smooth for the stars.

Appiah even though on retirement, was fantastic to watch when the stars engaged the musicians in a friendly duel a couple of weeks ago played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In fact, he should be re-called to stars fold for he has got a lot under his sleeve that could fetch Ghana's ticket to the Equatorial Guinea and Gabon 2012 African Cup of Nations and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil respectively.

In the same vein, the Laryea Kingston should also be given a second chance.

I wish the management of the national under- 23 team, the Black Meteor, headed by Kwesi Appiah, the best of  luck in the first leg of the All African Games (AAG) qualify against old foes, Nigeria in Lagos on Sunday.

LET'S SUPPORT ESSIEN.

Micheal Essien
One of the greatest deeds on this earth that is worth a prosperous life is to share what you have with others especially- the poor and needy.

Over the years individuals, organizations and the rest have tried the possible best to assist the less privileged in the various localities in the country. It is indeed a good initiative to be taken by one, once in a life time.

Indeed I was so delighted when I heard that Black Star’s dynamo, Micheal Essien has received a royal boost from High Serene Prince Albert of Monaco toward his Charity foundation in the form 15 Mont Blanc watches worth US$ 24,300 dollars each.

Essien, just a month ago brought most of the celebrated football players across the continent to play in a charity match to raise funds for an orphanage home in Kasoa in the Central region of Ghana.

I believe that Essien's foundation will create a platform to restore hope and determination for the underprivileged ones in the country especially in Awutu, his hometown in the central region of Ghana.

As a matter of fact, the Chelsea midfielder, popular known as ‘the bull’ among his fans who also doubles as the Au ambassador of peace in Africa has shown that in life we must help others even with the least we have.

I suggest that the public should render any form of support in pursuing this dream.

Again I would like to use your medium to appeal to all the footballers not to only  tread Essien’s course but also  help in eradicating poverty in the country.

ARTICLE: KUFFOUR DESERVES A TESTIMONIAL MATCH

Samuel Osei Kuffour

Our heroes of the past who contributed massively to the development of sports in the country deserve a befitting commendation.

However, it is indeed sad to notice that most of these once reliable, dependable, committed players which brought honour to nation some years back have not being honoured.

A player like Ex-Black Star defender, Samuel Osei Kuffour's  testimonial match is long overdue.

Just a couple of days ago in Nigeria, Kuffour joined his colleagues to play in Nwankwo Christian Nwosu Kanu testimonial match for his immense contribution to the super Eagles of Nigeria  over the years.

My question is when was the last time a hero was celebrated as far as football is concerned in this country?

Kuffour on the international front was a member of 200-01 Bayern Munich squad that won the ninth edition of the Uefa champions’ league, beating Valencia 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time.

And this made him the second player to attain such height for Ghana after the Maestro Abedi Ayew Pele led Olympic Marseille in France to win the Uefa champions league in 1993.

Again he scored the only goal of the match against Boca Juniors played in Tokyo to hand his side the intercontinental Cup and also finished as second in the African Footballer of the Year after voting in the same year.

The former King Faisal babies player popular known among his fans as 'Sammy Tugah' featured in all the national teams especially during the 1992 Olympics staged in Barcelona where the men’s football won bronze.

Although he committed a blunder during the 2006 World Cup staged in Germany when the Black Stars of Ghana locked horn against Azzurri of Italy in the group stages, must that be a factor for us to underrate his services to the nation all this while?

If this is anything to go by, then the ministry of youth and sports through the Ghana Football Association (GFA) should organize a ceremonial match for him to serve a morale booster for upcoming players not only in football but in other sporting disciplines as well.

ARTICLE: YOUNG BLUES WELL DONE.

I write to congratulate the ‘Junior Blues’ of  Berekum Chelsea for bringing fame to the country  after a few  spell in Berlin, Germany.

The youth team a few days ago outfoxed German side VFL Bochum by 11-10 on penalty shoot out to win this year’s Yokohama Cup in Ostrach, Germany.

The entire management of Berekum Chelsea has shocked me to the bone by being able to parade a youthful side within two seasons of topflight football in the country  to compete internationally.

Apparently, the last time i saw a youth side of a club from the country in a tournament was that of Abedi Pele's Nania FC in some years back.

I think the premier clubs must begin to put their youth teams to test in order to expose them to international scenes.

On the whole, kudos to Coach Kobina Amissah and Emmaunel Kyeremeh the CEO, for a good job done.

FISHERMEN PROTEST OVER THE USE OF LIGHT IN HIGH SEAS

By Ebenezer Zor & Joshua Kumavor

Source: Ghanaian Times

A group of fishermen led by the Executive Secretary of  the Ghana National Canoe Fisherman Association, Mr. Nii Abeo Kyere Kuanda, (Chief fisherman) yesterday thronged to the street of Accra calling on Government to intervene to halt fishing with light in the country.

The group from across the country carried placates with the inscriptions; 'President Mill fulfill your campaign promises', Ghana Navy be alive to your responsibility' and many more.

According to them, fishing with light is causing danger to the fishing industry.

A member of the group who gave his name as chairman Attah in an interview with Times said "the activities of these pair trawlers coupled with the usage of dynamite to catch fishes are unlawful".

He explained that, the light is inserted into the targeted area of the sea which draws the attention of smaller fishes than the bigger ones.

"This has made it difficult to catch the bigger fishes and also market them" he added.

Mr. Attah noted that the shortage of the premix fuel has necessitated such appalling act among certain fisherman.

He said though the police used water and gun shot to dismiss the group at the ministries, the leadership of the  group managed to present petition to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

GBA URGES DUO TO SUPPORT BOXING.

By Ebenezer Zor

Source: Ghanaian Times

The spokesman for the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Mr. Mohammed Amin Lamptey has urged two public figures to support boxing in the country.

He believes that the duo; Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Nii Nortey Duah and Mr. Alfred Vandepuye, Major of Accra can use their portfolios to revive the sport.

Mr. Lamptey made this known in an interview with Happy Fm yesterday during the morning sports show in Accra.

According to him boxing which use to be attractive in some years back where the likes of Barima Azumah Nelson, D.K Poison, Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey and the others did well to placed Ghana on the map, however, today less attention is being paid to the sport.

“Other sporting disciplines like Football, Badminton and the rest are being given some attention as compared to boxing” he noted.

He said there should be more resources to help beef up the sport to encourage all and sundry to love the discipline.

Mr. Lamptey stated that the sport not given the needed attention has contributed to the country’s inability to produce more world champions over the years.

He appealed to the government and other corporate institutions to throw their weight behind the sport to be more popular.

KOREA HOST STARS TODAY.

By Ebenezer  Zor.

Source: Ghanaian Times

Africa’s number one, the Black Stars of Ghana, after Congo clash will lock horns with South Korea in an international friendly at the Jeonju Stadium in South Korea today, hoping to continue with their fine form.

The Stars thrashed the Red Devils of Congo 3-1 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in a 2012 Nations Cup qualifier on Friday.

The clash will be the fourth meeting between the two nations and will see the Koreans playing without their most influential play maker, Ji Sung Park.

Park, was a mere passenger in the Manchester United set up that lost 1-3 in the final match of the UEFA champions league competition against FC Barcelona at the Wembley Stadium in England.

The announcement of his resignation from international career will spell doom for the Koreans who would have counted on his rich experience to face the Ghanaian arsenal.

The absence of Park who is supposed to play a pivotal role for the for the  Koreans, the ‘Taegeuk Warriors’ will be a setback for Coach Cho Kwang-Rae, but it would be a moment of joy for Stars Coach Goran Stevanovic because of the return of Chelsea’s matador Michael Essien.

The Stars with a good head-to-head count over the Koreans, having won two games and drawn one in the last meetings, will go into the duel as favourites.

However, the Koreans-  who were co-host of the 2002 World Cup and placed fourth, will bank on players  like Lee Chung- Yong (Bolton Wanderers) in England, Cha Du-Ri (Celtic) in Scotland, Jung Jo- Gook (Auxerre) in France, could pose a severe threat to the Stars.

But Stars coach, Stevanovic will rely on his formidable team consisting of the likes of skipper John Mensah (Sunderland), Kwadwo Asamoah (Udinese), Asamoah Gyan (Sunderland) and the others to do the magic for the nation.

Having participated in eight World Cup finals and becoming the first and only Asian team to reach the semifinals, in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the Koreans may want to come into the game with the solidarity intention of getting the better side of the four-time African champions.

CANAF 2011 LAUNCHED

By Ebenezer Zor & Naa Kwaamah Ankrah

The third edition of the Cup of African Nations for Amputee Football (CANAF) was launched on Tuesday at Alisa Hotel in Accra under the theme “Let’s be passionate about our passion.”

But the success of the event will depend on the kind of support it enjoys from the media and to that end, Mr. Francis Adjetey Sowah, president of the Amputee Football Federation of Africa (AFFA) has appealed to the media to contribute their quota to promotion the game of amputee football which has gained international recognition.

Addressing newsmen at the launch in Accra, Mr. Sowah, who doubles as the Ghana Amputee Football Federation (GAFF) chairman said “Football is a good platform to promote the laudable concept of bringing Africa together to share common goals and aspirations”.

Ghana, represented by the ‘Black Challenge’, won the maiden edition hosted by Sierra Leone but failed to participate in the second edition hosted by Liberia due to financial constraints and hoped that Ghana will makes amends with the hosting of the next edition slated for October, 15-25, 2011 at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium.

Out of the 12 nations expected to participate in the 10 days soccer fiesta, only five nations, including Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Niger and Angola have confirmed their participation, Mr. Sowah, adding that the GAFF is in still holding discussion with others like South Africa, DR Congo, Algeria, Kenya, Rwanda and Mali.

He said as a part of the preparations to ensure that Ghana hosts and wins CANAF 2011, the National Amputee Team, the Black Challenge will engage in some international matches in July to put the team in shape for the October tournament.

The GAFF boss commended the government for the tremendous support offered to the national association that saw the Black Challenge to become the first African country to ever reach the quarter-finals of the Amputee World Cup in Argentina.

Launching the event, the CEO of Krypton Ghana Limited, Mr. Neil Armstrong Mortagbe intimated that the media should allow the theme of CANAF to reflect in their reportage.

He opined that the Ghana Amputee team can upset the apple-cart in the tournament and called on Ghanaians to patronize the event to support the team.

In a solidarity message, the CEO of the Emperor Gaza International Foundation, a sponsor for the event, Mr. Prince Charles Sackeyfio stated that, CANAF 2011 will be an opportunity to lend support to the less privileged in society, saying, “Who have through one incident or the other been denied the privilege of leading a normal life as any other person”.

“We decided to lend a hand to the GAFF not only to organize CANAF, but also to create a platform that would pave the way to see the welfare of the playing body of the team.

“Emperor Gaza International Foundation, a Non-Government Organization (NGO) seeks among others, to promote the can do spirit in the youth and people with disability, to play a pivotal role in the development of their skills and the community” he noted.

The function was attended by a representative from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr. Solomon Mensah and representatives from All For One Supporters Unions, Bob Okala and others.
